Wow! This web-site brings back memories of a childhood many many moons ago. Like some of the commentators here, I did not continue till Std.10 but left after about Std 5 (can't remember!!) because my Dad was transferred to Upper Burma. But MEHS holds the best memories for me because it was where I first went to school. When Dad passed away, going through his mementos, tears came to my eyes when I saw the admission card from MEHS saying that I was admitted to the afternoon session in 1951! Dad must have been proud of me getting a good start in education. I still have that card and report cards! I remember Dad and Mum contributing towards the new extensions.

I also remember Lydia Ba Than and I as the 2 Karen girls who spoke a bit of Karen, English and Burmese, but not fluent in any, when we started Lower KG and also Mrs. Logie herself coming in to pick up some new kids who were crying their heads off while we watched wide-eyed.

The teachers who remain in my memory are Mrs. McKertish, Mrs. Greenwell and Mrs. Trutwein (sister of Mrs. Baretto). Daw Yin Hla I think was our Burmese teacher. If anyone can provide info on Mrs. Trutwein, I'd appreciate it very much because she was my MKG teacher as well as my after school tuition teacher, a very caring person indeed. My "let-oo-saya" so to speak. And the school bus - Sky Liner (there was also one named Sky Rocket)- the owner/driver was Uncle Dennis. Can't recall the surname. Where is he now? The last I heard was that they're in Australia. Living in 32 Little Sisters' Road (Lu-oh-yone Lan)in Kandawgalay at that time I was the first to be picked up and the last one to be dropped off. Uncle Dennis used to call me "Curly Top".

Maureen Lee, Rita Chung, Malcolm Kamdar, Dorothy Gould, Austin Win Maung, Rosalind Chan, Sandra Aye Myint, Shakuntala Chopra are some names that come to mind as I write this. Class mates, tuition mates or bus mates?? Others senior to us are of course remembered well as our prefects or well-known for sports or lessons. I belonged to Wesley House.

Okay, will stop now before I get too carried away down memory lane. Would love to hear from people who can jog some more memories of the 50s MEHS days. Also to share professional interests. I'm now Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of Academic Programmes in the ESOl Section, School of Languages, Auckland University of Technology. Emigrated to NZ in 1991 and decided to settle down here to form a base for our 2 children after my husband's UNV assignment in the Maldives. Do visit our home-page at http://www.sawmack.homestead.com

Will write and say hello to Mrs. Logie now that I know her address. Thanks again. Keep up the great work of this "humungous global network"

Yes, I did read the article by Tom Manton. It was excellent. But I was wondering where the Mantons were and why they were not at the Reunion in Stouport. I have since received several messages from past alumni including Lloyd Paxton and Winston Sharma, and so has my brother Granville from old friends of his. This is so wonderful!

While I was in the MEHS (July 2001), I took a few digicam pictures. You will have to excuse the poor quality of my handiwork but at least you'll get some idea. The most amazing thing is that VERY little has changed, especially the school assembly hall which is exactly as it was when I was last there in 1963. Apart from the logo above the stage, of course - as you will see from what I managed to photograph. The most disturbing change was finding my Upper KG Room has been turned into an enormous Buddha shrine room for worshipping in. Nothing wrong with that in itself, but a weird experience for my eyes - I was remembering Mrs. Aung, our form teacher and the way it was as a classroom. The Shed is still The Shed and little else seems to have changed, at least at the front end of the school. They have preserved the old school bell exactly where it used to be in the school entrance hall but they say that's for sentimental purposes because they use an electrical bell system instead.

The pictures are taken on July 30th 2001 to be precise. It was such a poignant occasion for me. I walked into the school with my young brother and simply went wherever I wished without any problems. I went first to the principal's office to find someone who could point me towards a teacher connected with MEOSA. The chap (don't know who/what he was but he was obviously a senior person of some sort) was very helpful and told me to go wherever I wished. I suppose it helped that I did not tell him I wanted to take photos. I just did that anyway.

The old man in picture 1 told me that the bell (Pict 11) was preserved for sentiment sake but they don't ring it anymore. For such a small thing, it gave rise to a lot of strong and emotive imagery for me when I saw it. The best thing of all was being able to find the "Lamp" preserved within the logo above the stage. You can see it easily if you focus in on it. Also, if you enlarge and focus in on the wall just behind the sign saying "principal's office" in Pict 2, you may see a couple holes in the wall, presumably where the old brown sign in English used to be...........

The pictures are somewhat poorly lit and the overall resolutions have been stepped down so much that you may not be able to read some interesting bits. Unless you want to read what's written on the notice board in Pict 11 you'll probably be OK with these as they are. This is really a case of "never mind the quality, feel the width" as the old English joke goes. If anyone wants the original upgraded images I'll be happy to send them one by one but be warned, they take around 5 MB each.

Now that I realise how easy it was, I wish I had taken a longer time and got more pictures. I must say I felt a bit like a burglar or an interloper so I didn't spend any time going round to the back end of the school to my other favourite corners. I will do so on my next trip to Myanmar - hopefully that will be in January 2002 unless I'm lucky enough to get another market research commission sooner. Then, I will try to make sure to be there on the last weekend of the month which is when MEOSA has its regular meetings.

My best regards to all who know me -

May Tha-Hla

P.S. If anyone would like to have an original high res pic and their emails can handle it or they have a dropzone to send it to, I don't mind sending them singly. The maximum is 5 MB each (camera resolution is 3.4 mega pixels so actually the pictures are incredibly sharp for those who want to nose into a corner or home in on the lamp above the stage!).

I remember Lester Halhed and Michael Ling. I wonder if there is a picture of both of them when they attended M.E.H.S. Both my aunts were teachers with Mrs. Logie before the war and my grandmother, who was a principal at St. Phillips knew Mrs. Logie and her family very well since they attended the same church. My aunts were Constance (Beale) Fenn and Ann Beale and my grandmother Frances Estelle Beale, everyone called her Stella. I wonder who else is out there from the distant past! As I mentioned to Robin, Gillian's husband, that Gillian took me upstairs a couple of times when we first started school in l949 and gave me sandwiches since I did not always have lunch. I remember well the Robertson's Lemon Curd.
