On May 26,1998, a group of us at the Washington D.C. metropolitan area had an annual
MEHSA get-together at Jenny Tun Aung's (McIntosh) house in Maryland. (Group picture
posted in the Photo Gallery) The occasion was to get together to bid farewell to our dear
friend Cleo Appleton (Kyin Oo), who is leaving the United States for her husband's (Rich) new
post in Calgary, Canada, and also for the arrival of the WinTheins, Gloria (Hengshoon) and
Jimmy (Khoo) from Los Angeles.
Since it was a coordinated effort, and also a Saturday afternoon, about 40 - 50 of us showed up, including spouses and family members. Our kind hostess, Jenny treated us to "Kaw-ye Khauk-swe", but in normal Burmese tradition, the menu grew, to include Cleo's salmon mousse, Juliet Teoh's home-made buffalo wings and papaya salad, Poppet Oo (Than Myaing)'s "Faluda", Maureen Franssen (Nyun Han)'s "laphet-thoke", Bo Zaw Win's large "Welcome MEOSA" cake, Phyllis Kader (Aung Gaing)'s "Sa-nwin-ma-kin", Marlar Sithu's (Marjorie Htoon) "Mon-let -saung", Khin Mg Htay (Tommy Htay)'s drinks and Than Tun (Eric Kay)'s champagne followed by a huge birthday cake to celebrate the birthday of Julian Taw's wife, Kyu-Kyu. So we all had good times and lots of fun. Our thanks to the unidentified chefs who brought a meatloaf dish, a carrot "sa-nwin-ma-kin", and a wonderful moist orange glazed pound cake. The highlights of the party after stuffing ourselves with all the goodies and group photo sessions were ...."A Sing-Along" with the reprinted Methodist English School song book that Gloria had so kindly made available for sale (refer to the Nostalgia section of the website for more information). A lovely time was had, under the conductorship of Bo Zaw Win and Douglas San Lin, as we belted out our favourite songs such as "Zum Gali Gali", "Sarasponda", "Kookaburra" and of course, our unforgettable MEHS school song. Cynthia Thaw (Aye) brought some photographs from her recent trip to England where she went to see Mrs. Logie and also our dear friend, Kyaw Thinn (Leo Tan). On behalf of Mrs. Logie who is forever grateful for the collections she has been receiving from her students, Juliet Teoh distributed some door prizes of Mobil memorabilia to ten lucky winners. We were especially honored to have in this gathering not only alumini residing in the metropolitan Washington DC-Baltimore area, but also Helen Aung Ya from Burma, who is visiting and looking after her sister Daphne Aung Ya in New York, Marjorie Htoon from Thailand, Gloria Hengshoon, Jimmy Khoo & John Htwe Mg from Los Angeles, Frank Chein Lyan from New Jersey, and Eric Kay and Henry Teoh from New York. I would like to convey our heartfelt thanks to our gracious hosts, Jenny and husband Ko Tun Aung for having this wonderful event at their place and for the good Kaw-ye khauk-swe. Also my special thanks go to Poppet Than Myaing for the best Falooda that she makes every time for this event. More thanks to Gloria Hengshoon for reprinting our school song book, by which deed she made us sing all those school songs and made us all young again once more ........ Our thanks also go to Teacher Daw Yin Hla for attending this event and tolerating our youthful pranks and loud remarks without scolding us....... (like in the old days), and last, but not the least, our special thanks to the spouses and family members who have so kindly participated in all our get-togethers and putting up with our endless nostalgic recollections of our wild shenanigans during our carefree days in the good 'ol MEHS. For the next upcoming event for the MEHSA gathering, our dear friends Cynthia Aye and Tin Maung Thaw have graciously accepted the honor of hosting it at their place. Keep a good lookout for details at the end of the year! |
