I was at the school back in 1955. Any way that I can trace students of my vintage? Is there anyone who was at MEHS in 1955 in Mrs. Brindley's class? She was a good teacher especially with Mathematics. She was also quite good at giving us the cane! Does anyone know what became of Mrs. Brindley?

A suggestion: The section, "Your Comments" has a collection of various comments from many years sent by alums and friends. A reader can access trove of comments. I like to suggest the same for "Inquiries" and "Special Announcement" (if memory space will permit). This will enable reader to browse past and present postings.

Hi,
I was in MEHS from 1955 to 1958. My classmates were Rita Chopra, Vivian Sudan, Biplap Chakraborty and Kusum Thakkar. These names stand out as Biplap had written an article in the 'Swaying Palm' wherein he referred to me as being the shortest in class. I am wondering if anyone is in touch with them. I fondly remember Prunell Manook and also Mrs.Logie. Those were by far the most wonderful days of my young years.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone out there. Is it possible to get a copy of the 1957 'Swaying Palm'?

Thanks.
Leela.

Somebody gave me the address for this site years ago, but I never succeeded in getting into it. It is only recently that we've subscribed to internet access from home, and I stumbled onto it during the Christmas break... It is so nice to see so many names appear out of the long-ago; my classmates spread all over the world, my teachers (even Mr.Fuller's post!)... Miss Gaw (amazing how we keep refering to Teacher Minnie as Miss Gaw!) came for dinner at my apartment a fortnight ago, and we reminisced about MEHS & about Edwin taking on the job of Postmaster for many MEHS friends... Those who do not remember my name might remember me as "David Ba Htay's sister"; matriculated 1961... I'm working in KL & would love to hear from you! My e mail addresses are hlayee@hotmail.com and hlayeeyee@imu.edu.my

Hi MEOSAs,

Here is one more item to be added to the Burmese Restaurants list of our "Science Sayagyi" Mr. Fuller. I would like to introduce a new Burmese restaurant by the name of "Burma Road". Authentic Burmese and Asian cuisine are available there. The food is excellent, price is reasonable, place is spacious, clean, neat and tidy; location is easy to drive, and open 7 days a week. Especially, if you like Burmese food, you can have the real Burmese taste just like in Burma. If you have a chance to visit Maryland, or if you live around Maryland, it would be worthwhile to give a visit. Here are the details. Address:

617 S. Frederick Ave.
Gaithersburg, MD 20877
Telephone: 301 963 1429
Check it out and don't forget to give your taste buds a try. Its worth it!!

In response to Malika Shah's email, I too was close to the Vaswani family. Rajan Vaswani has passed away some time ago. I had an opportunity to meet him last during 1968 in Miami, Florida. The last I heard about his sister Gita was when she was in Pune, India. Brother Mohan was in New York and brother Ishwar was in the Caribbean. I believe Ishwar too passed away.

I have been in Australia from 1964 and married a German and have two children Kurt and Cindy. I am in touch with our gang, which was Edith Mariano, Lyn Tun Tin, Denise Taborda, Betty McKertich and myself. I have some graduation photos, which I will try and send.

Since discovering your website in August 2006, this is the third time and also for the 2nd year consecutive I am writing here. As I have already said last year, my high opinions of your website haven't changed. Thanks again to the excellent work of Kenny Teoh. I usually consult the website, at least once a week to look for any updates and I have noticed enormous additions to the photo gallery sections. This is probably due to the boom in the digital photography.

Last January, I attended the 3rd International MEHSA Reunion in Bangkok. I owe my thanks to Ko Cho Sett who invited me and also to Edwin Tin Tut for his kind hospitality and help in looking after my hotel accomodations. I met for the first time, Julian Taw, Jimmy Khoo, Gloria Hengshoon, Sandra Rahmin, Julia Win, Jenny Su, Winsome Sein Tun, Tony Khoo, Lilian Tha Gyaw, etc. I also enjoyed re-meeting again after some 35 or 40 years, my friends, Cecil Wagstaff, Eugene Sio, Wallace Hla, Pamela Soe Nyun, Shirley Nyunt and Maureen Tin Oo. However, I do regret not to have seen Kenny Teoh nor Daphne, Dinah, Julia, Julie, Jeannie, Phyllis and Winnie (deliberately left out the family names but the persons concerned would know who I am referring to).

I look forward to seeing all of you again at the next International Meeting 2010 in Pattaya, Thailand.

Dear MEHSA,

Following Cyclone Nargis and some work I went to do for the victims last May/June, I wanted to draw everyone's attention to the charity I have now set up and registered in the UK. It is called ~ "Helping the Burmese Delta". The rudimentary website which is still "work-in-progress" is at www.HelpingTheBurmeseDelta.org. Please do encourage our alumni to visit the site which will be looking much better very soon.

My husband and I have so far collected £85,000 (approx $170,000) just through friends, colleagues from our previous companies and their passing the message on. We are using the "Barack Obama technique" of email fundraising and feel very pleased with what has been achieved without incurring heavy costs. People have been amazingly generous.

I went out to Burma in early May/June with the first tranche of money and managed to reach around 5,200 people on emergency food runs into the eastern part of the delta in the Dedaye region. We have also built 67 huts from scratch and helped to repair and waterproof many 100s more in several villages in the extreme west, beyond Haingyi where even after 9 weeks there have been no signs of any outside aid at all. The work was done in the middle of raging monsoon rain and winds and my brave little band of girls and chaps went out on a boat and stayed there with some volunteer carpenters and their helpers for nearly 3 weeks to do this work.

The people wanted to do their repairs and building work but simply did not have any resources apart from bamboo and their bare hands. They were panicking about the onset of the wet and windy weather and begged my team to help them when they went out on an earlier reconnaissance trip. We took them a couple of thousand blankets, cooking pots, rice, lentils, oil, tarpaulin bales, woodworking tools, secondhand clothes and so on. I've also managed to give a bit of financial support to one of our alumni in Burma who is doing a magnificent job of sending out teams of doctors and nurses into hard to reach southern regions, but wishes to remain low key so no name to be published.

We are now kicking into the next, mid term phase, looking at potential projects to rehabilitate and support, going beyond just emergency aid. We think that by supporting key workers such as farmers and fishermen, in effect we will be able to spread the benefits wider in the community as their families thrive and pass on the benefits. One of our wealthiest donors has also asked me to consider a major project such as building and equipping schools (for which the survivors and the monks are crying out).

My next trip will be on August 22nd to explore what is best to be done on a community basis for the mid to longer term. Please invite our alumni to support and donate to our work, which I do privately and quietly on the ground in Burma so that we are not barred. I have established means of getting the finances into Yangon so there is no problem there. In spite of the out of date message on the website, the charity is now officially recognized in the UK and the details are as follows:

Charity registration number: 1124774
Address: 7 Harvard Road, Chiswick, London W4 4EA
Donations can be by cheque to the above address or by direct transfer to:
CAF Bank
A/c name: Helping the Burmese Delta
A/c number: 00016850 Branch Code 40-52-40
(Anyone donating from the UK can fill out a Gift Aid form which allows us to collect tax relief which inflates the amount given). If anyone chooses to contribute, do let us know so that we can thank and acknowledge your gift.

We are happy to answer any questions, or to receive ideas for fundraising.

Best wishes to all,
May Tha-Hla

Dear fellow members of our alma mater,

My thoughts are with all of you who have relatives and friends in the beloved land of our birth. I hope you have been able to make contact with them. Is anything being done collectively in the USA and Oz? Here in the UK I have been able to donate funds through my local bank and Burma (Myanmar) is still constantly in the news. I have been able to find out news of my dear friends, one of whom I had seen in the UK just a few weeks before the cyclone. She had visited to look after her sister who had a triple by-pass operation. Once again my prayers are with the beloved country of our birth and my good wishes are for each and every one of you.

I miss our old cronies Allen Martin, Joe Martin, Richard Chain, Vivian Sharma, Agnes MacKintosh and others. I would love to get in touch with Myrna Rodriguez, the girl with the beautiful voice, and my neighbor at Halpin Road.

I have been in Houston, for the last 38 years as an engineer.

Still trying to locate Thomas Manton. Or either of his brothers, David or William, and Karis, his sister. He seems to have disappeared from all the places where we last met. Any contact would be appreciated as we go back to before the war, and his family and ours were close, as was Doreen Logie. Doreen I did meet here in England many, many years ago. There was a family called the Murrays also. Many of that family died on the Burma Trek, but I believe some survived. My own Uncle died also on that trek, which was a terrible time for many of us. Any news would be gratefully received.
