No suggestions or comments, just a query. I notice that you do not mention Miss Charity Thein, one of the most brilliant maths teachers that we had at MEHS. Could anyone let me know what has become of her? I read with great sadness of the passing of Mrs. Hein Tin, my geography teacher. She used to know my mother, who was also a teacher at the Burmese Methodist School (could not be lured away by Mrs. Logie despite several attempts) and also taught at Burma American Institute. Mrs. Hein Tin often used to say I should become a teacher but no thanks I saw the hours my mother had to put in at home and I had no calling for it. I wait to hear from anyone who knows about Miss Thein. [Editor's note: Sadly, Miss Thein passed away several years ago.] |

We were the experimental class as far as GCEs were concerned. Mrs. Logie decided to go for the UK exams as well as the local ones. Therefore the top class was divided into two - those that took the local matriculation and those who wanted to sit for the GCE. Our form teacher was Mrs. De Glanville who at first taught us English and History, then just concentrated on English when Mrs. King taught us history (most dull). Charity Thein taught us maths, Mrs. Hein Tin geography, Mrs. Rosemeyer Religious Knowledge. Mrs. Sawyer was Assistant Principal for a brief while and then left for England. My class mates were Moselle Raymond, Mercy Gosh, Audrey Shoostry, Daphne Turner, Lesley Ling (RIP) and of course for a brief while Doug Fitchen. |

I told several of my friends that the best $10,000 donation by an NGO in the 20th Century was a gift by the American Methodist Church to rebuild MEHS after World War Two. This gift provided the educational skills for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of us to reside in America, UK, Australia etc. Juliet Teoh will be pleased and proud of what her MEHSA website has accomplished. MEHS is now an international community with alumni "embassies" and "consulates" all over the world. Richard YuKhin '61 |

Dear friends, A couple of weeks ago, Richard Yu Khin pointed out to me a piece written by Edwin Htut, in the Reflections Section. I did not know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised to find out that Edwin was referring to my interview I did in Yangon while I was there on my home leave. What struck me most about this was how the depth of friendship we developed during our young days at MEHS continued, even when we are not so young anymore. I always felt that even though we have not seen each other for so many years, we can always count on one another. I am still surprised at the bonds that are still strong even after all these years. Many years ago, while I was still working in Yangon, Tu Tu Than Tin (she passed away recently) called me and asked me to work on a research project for her Ministry. It came out of the blue, and little did we know how the work led to bigger and better things. I think of Winsome Ba Thaike (now in the States) when we worked together at the Ministry of Health. I think of Nyunt Nyunt (Po Soe Nyunt's sister) and Helen Sein, friends I helped out without even thinking. I remember Julia Win, who let me stayed with her in Addis Abba while I was on mission there. I met Winston Aye Maung (Moe) in Cambodia and later we together formed the UN Myanmar Association for all Burmese staff members of the UN in New York. I had Janet Aung, Amy Sio, and Ko Thet Win (Frank Chein Lian's younger brother) to help me out. When we think of MEHS, I think what happens after, is equally if not more important than what happened during the school days. When we entered the University, it was quite obvious that we were different. We sticked close to one another - I had Roland Kin, Johnny Saing, Robert Twe Maung (Zut) as classmates till we graduated. There was Tu Tu, Amy Tin Gyi, Amy Kyin Thein, Shirley Aung, Jasmine Hussein and Blossom Shein. Later, Roland, Jasmine, Blossom and I become tutors at the Department of Commerce in 1966. I truly believe that being at MEHS gave us a head start in our lives. We should be grateful to our parents to sent us there and our teachers for bringing us up in the right manner. Best wishes. I just came to know that my Class Teacher, Mrs. Dalia Myat San (VIIth Standard - 1961) was living in Singapore. I have just returned from that place, and had I known earlier, I would have made it a point to meet her! Anyway, there's always tomorrow.

As Nila Hla said, with this MEHSA site we have the opportunity to send messages across the world. When I was browsing through the letters I saw one from Alice U wondering where the teachers she had through the years were. I replied to her, and told her that her kindergarten teacher, Myrtle McKertich, was pleased to hear she, Alice, was doing well. Others I have contacted have replied. Lester Hallad and Fay Fencott, actually went to visit my mother. Our mothers were girlhood friends and their visit brought back many memories for my 93 year old mother, way beyond the MEHS days. This site has also invoked old memories for. Those Christmas plays we had, with the angels walking down the centre aisle of the school gym holding lit candles. Its a wonder we did not set fire to the person in front. In those days there was no such thing as flame proof. One student was disappointed that the school name was changed, but we have all moved forward, left the nest, gone out into the world, some of us even changed our name. Enjoy all the great memories we have stored up and let the future unfold as it may. Best wishes Kim Edwards nee McKertich |

Retirement means a lot of time on your hands. No! I refuse to volunteer as then you may as well go to the office and earn money. Going through the pictures of students and teachers brought back many, many, pleasant memories. Pat, my sister lives with our mother (93 this year) and both are hale and hearty. Our mother taught kindergarten till we emigrated to England in 1955. This wonderful mother of ours has written two memoirs and is working on the third. Pat is the one who really worked on the trilogy. Looking through the letters etc for the MEHSA site I noticed many of the names were mentioned in my mother's book. These must have been old families in Burma. Everyone should write of their life in Burma. That was a most romantic time. Kim Edwards (nee McKertich) |

OK Edwin, I saw the effects of the whiskey....in the singing on stage... I'm writing this from Burma, just a day before I leave to return to the UK, having just come back from a lovely eveing out with Valerie Ohn Gaing and Melody Myint Toon. I attended as an overseas returnee and was very lucky to have been able to catch up with about 10 of my classmates including Melody Myint Tun, Winnie Tin Htut, Tin May Lwin, Khin Pyu Win, Hazel Kyaw Zaw, Tin Aung Cho, Melvin Hein Tin, Winsome Sein Tun and others. It would be nice to see a full list of those who attended - I am sure my other old classmates were there, but returning to the group after 40 years of absence made recognition very difficult. It was difficult to peer too hard at half familiar faces for fear of being rude. Anyway, the resident Burmese contingent should be congratulated for putting on such a good, well organised morning ceremony at MEHS/Dagon and evening party in a really nice setting around the pool at the Sedona. Those who did not manage to make it to the occasion were very much missed by us (Deepak, where were you?). We all hope they will be able to get to Burma on another occasion if we are lucky enough to have another reunion. It is not easy for everyone to be able to return from abroad, so maybe we should aim for a second international reunion soon?
Best wishes to all |

3rd. International MEHSA Reunion successfully completed at Yangon on Saturday 8, 2005 !!!! 8th. January 2005 was a good and auspicious day for everyone attending the morning session at the School and dinner at Sedona Hotel facing Inya Lake. I just arrived back from Yangon to Bangkok home and this e-mail could be the first "BREAKING NEWS" about this celebration in Yangon last night. Photos will follow from many others attending the occasion at a later stage but I like to give you an initial short account. Donations were made to the teachers and some senior teachers get as much as Kyat 120,000/- !!! Prizes were won at the evening dinner. Songs were sung, drinks were flowing and probably one group of ten had consumed (5) Black Labels between 1900-2400 last night !! There are only a few from abroad attending the dinner though many listed themselves in the website that they are going. We missed many friends who could not attend, locally and from abroad. Look out for more news and photos. White T-Shirts with school motto were sold. Better idea than the maroon colored T-Shirt at the U.K. Reunion. Sincerely,
Edwin |

I was too young (approx. age 7) to remember the answers to any of the validation questions. However, I am e-mailing a copy of a school photo that was taken in January 1950 (lower kindergarden). Miss Brown was my teacher. You're welcome to add it to your photo portfolio. In the photo, I'm 6th from the right in the back row. Eliazbeth Waymark, the only person that I remember in the photo, is the 1st from the right in the front row. It will be interesting to see if there are others out there who recognize themselves in the photo. I was recently introduced to the web site by Swapan Nag, whom I met through his brother, Pradosh, in Toronto. Coincidentally, I went to school (St. Xavier's) in Calcutta with Francis Porter, an ex-MEHS student. Although I knew his parents were from Burma, I didn't know at that time that he also went to MEHS. |

I wonder if anyone has more group photographs of the classes, especially 1956 and 1959. These were the graduating classes that interest me in particular. I enjoyed reading Chandroo's account of his recent visit and lovely photographs. I have printed it for my mother who is still very nostalgic about Burma. There are so many names I recognize in reading the comments. I shall try to send some pictures of the next reunion of old friends at my home. Someone "out there" will recognize them! |
